A rare western animation adaptation of a manga, Summit of the Gods is a fairly good adapation. It centers around the mystery of whereas George Mallory was the first to summit Mt. Everest, and the lengths the protagonist goes to to find the truth and gradually fall in love with the mountain itself.
The animation is grandiose, balancing the whiteness of snow with the dim atmosphere of storms. The whole movie has a slight gritty lighting, though it brightens up like in flashback sequences.
The character drama is also good, never feeling overtly overdramatic. The suspense is high throught.
